ULHT’s Director of Finance and Corporate Affairs Karen Brown experienced a busy A&E shift on Saturday 27 January, shadowing Consultant Dr Meg Roberts.
Here’s what she had to say:
I’ve been in the department for six hours today, it’s been an incredibly challenging morning for all staff. I feel incredibly proud of how well the team work together to ensure patient safety is priority but also, how they support each other. The care and compassion really shines through despite the hurdles faced.
Being here in the department really highlights how much pressure is on the department and how this impacts on the rest of the hospital.
Keeping patients flowing really is key to achieve the excellence we are striving for. With no flow today, no empty resus trolleys, all A&E trolleys in use and paramedics queuing with patients, I have seen the department under tremendous pressure and it has been truly an insightful experience with lots to take away.
I would just like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to Dr Meg Kelly for allowing me to shadow her whilst doing an amazing job of leading her team and thank you to all for welcoming me into the department today.
I can only echo what Jan said at Trust Board, we are so grateful for the constant hard work and efforts made by staff every day it is relentless and the continue to go above and beyond for our patients, as an exec team we are so proud.
Karen is looking forward to visiting the A&E department at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston soon.
